What’s all this then? Just when we thought that 2009 was going to be all about the Nokia N97 and Palm Pre fighting it out for domination of the smartphone world, along comes Samsung with their new OmniaHD.

Announced today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, it’s the innocent little HD in the device’s name that should give you a clue as to what makes it special. This little slap of gadget goodness includes a 8 megapixel camera with full 720p HD video recording! Specs like that would be impressive anyway but when you consider what a sleek looking ‘phone this is, they really are quite an achievement.

The OmniaHD runs Symbian’s  S60 5th Edition operating system so is fully touch-enabled. We haven’t seen it in the flesh yet but those that have report that the 3.7″, 16:9 ratio, AMOLED display is simply stunning.

The phone comes with the usual other features for a top-end device including GPS and a special Samsung ’3D interface’  with mobile widgets for the homescreen displaying up-to-date information of your choice.

We’re QWERTY men at heart so a device without a keyboard has to do a lot to catch our eye but, Samsung, you have our attention…
